Fund Raising Bike Ride

Cardiff to Caernarfon
Castle to Castle
29th June – 6th July 2019

It was certainly a challenge but I felt privileged to have cycled with a group of inspiring people, through some of the most outstanding scenery in the UK, whilst raising money for such a brilliant charity as Odyssey. In a way, the ride was like an advanced Odyssey course: we were outside for most of the time and, although I was tired after the ride, I felt a massive sense of achievement and the will to make every living minute count. Jane Myatt. Odyssey participant 2011, cyclist 2013

The Journey

The journey starts at Cardiff Castle and travels along the National Cycle Route of Wales, Lôn Las Cymru, to the World Heritage Site of Caernarfon Castle. Graded as a challenge route by Sustrans, the ride follows a mix of traffic free cycle paths and quiet minor roads through some of the most spectacular scenery in Britain. Inevitably there are a few short sections on busier roads but these occur around towns where there’s no alternative.  Although the route is considered a challenge, enough time is allowed each day to enjoy the towns, villages and the 7 castles we’ll be passing on route! For full details see the daily itinerary.

Staffing and Support

The group will be accompanied by 2 experienced members of Odyssey staff.  In addition vehicle back up will transport your luggage and equipment between daily destinations and…should you need it….be on hand to give you a lift! Simple repairs and maintenance can be dealt with by the team. For repairs requiring more technical know-how your bike will be driven to a local bike shop.

Bikes

The route is ideal for classic touring bikes, hybrids or trekking mountain bikes. The most important thing is to be comfortable in the saddle.  It is anticipated that people will want to use their own bikes, however for anyone wishing to hire we will be happy to arrange it.

Accommodation

In order to keep costs to a minimum overnight stops are divided between bunkhouses and campsites, an option that enables us to stay in remote and beautiful locations and divide the week’s cycling into manageable chunks.  Details can be found in the daily itinerary.  On camping nights Odyssey will provide a communal tent for eating and a number of 2 person tents in which to sleep.  On the final night Friday 6th July hotel accommodation will be arranged at the Premier Inn in Caernarfon where friends and family wishing to help us celebrate will be welcome to stay at their own expense.

Meals

Breakfast and a hearty evening meal will be provided at the beginning and end of every day.  Ingredients for a packed lunch will be supplied each morning. Tea shops en route provide an opportunity for further sustenance!

Transfers

For those wishing to return to Cardiff a direct train service operates from Bangor. Luggage and bikes will be transported back to Cardiff by van.

Fundraising Options

To raise the total of £1,500 – of which approx. £750 covers the actual cost of the trip

  1. Sponsorhip: To raise the full amount (£1,500) through sponsorship/fundraising. In this case it is important to inform sponsors that approx 50% of funds donated go towards the cost of the trip.
  2. Self-funding: To pay the costs of the trip (£750) out of your own pocket and then pledge to raise the remaining £750 through sponsorship/fundraising (as a minimum!) – in which case ALL donated funds go to the charity.

Signing up for the trip early will give plenty of time to raise the necessary funds. Odyssey staff will be able to give you fundraising tips. Your employer may also do a match funding.
