Castle to Castle

25th Anniversary Bike Ride

Day 1. And  we’re off!  Cardiff Bay along Sustrans Route 8, the National Cycle Route of Wales.

15 mins later and time for a photoshoot  outside Cardiff Castle. The first of many!
Now the ride can begin…with a nice flat cycle along the Taff Trail to Merthyr Tudful.

After Merthyr we get our first glimpse of the Brecon Beacons.
Another 10 mins and Yvette is waiting for us …with CAKE!

A great first night bivy.
Day 2 and a tough start up and over  the Brecon Beacons.

…where the going gets easier alongside the Brecon Canal.
Beautiful rolling countryside and our first night under canvas ….

Who said we’d be roughing it!!
Day 3 and first stop Hay Castle!!

We console ourselves with delicious ice-cream.
And sumptuous countryside.

Oh, oh  …we’ve hit a traffic jam.
Flaking out at the end of an exhausting day.

Day 4. First stop Builth Wells…
…then lunch beside the River Wye, near Rhyader,   the halfway point, both in time and distance.

Llanidloes ..and we’re over half way …time to relax a bit!
Day 5. Starting with a stretch…

…before heading to our high point.
A great lunch spot. This lovely memorial to Wynford Vaughn Thomas looks out towards Snowdonia, it was, he said “the best view in Wales”.

After lunch a fantastic 8 mile descent to Machynlleth.  Further down the road Hugo relaxes  at the bunkhouse in Corris.
Day 6. More ups …

…..more downs
…more cake!

And more stunning scenery as we cycle alongside the Mawddach Estuary towards Barmouth .
…where sun, sea and sand are calling to us.

A long and rewarding day which finishes at Snowdon Lodge;  birthplace of  “Lawrence of Arabia” .
Day 7.  Our final day…

..we arrive all too soon at Caernarfon Castle: tired, happy, thrilled at what we’ve achieved, sad the week is over.

Thanks to our amazing cyclists: Jane, Bill, Pete, Fran, Louise, Ellie, Caroline and Steve who between them raised a fabulous £10,000 for Odyssey. Thanks also to the wonderful support team: Yvette, Norman, Hugo and Tony…whose hard work kept the show on the road!!
